I prefer tea to coffee. Preferuji čaj před kávou. Můžeme použít prefer v takovéto podobě.
I prefer dancing to skiing. Upřednostňuji tančení před lyžováním. Když mluvíme o činnosti (dancing, skiing) tak po prefer se píše –ing forma (gerundium) takže proto dancing a skiing.
I prefer reading to watching TV.
I prefer cycling to driving.
WOULD PREFER TO …. RATHER THAN ... - preferovat ... před
Shall we eat out tonight? I would prefer to stay at home. Budeme dnes v noci jíst venku? Já bych raději zůstal doma.
I would prefer to stay later in bed.

It´s late. We had better go home. Je pozdě. Měli bychom jít domů.
We had better go home. = We should go home. = (We ought to go home.)
They had better be silent. = They should be silent. = (They ought to be silent.)
